Shiratani Unsuikyo ravine

 

It is a natural forest at an altitude of 600 to 1050m ,where you can appreciate to see beautiful Yaku cedar.

You have three different walking course, the Yayoi cedar course, the Bugyo cedar course and the Taikoiwa rock round trip course.

The foot of the forest is covered with ferns and moss, and has a beauty reminiscent of a garden.

Among them the "moss forest" which was one of the model of the movie "Princess Mononoke" and the view surrounding Taikoiwa rock is very popular especially during the wild cherry blossoms.

Yakusugi land

A natural forest spread around 1000 m above the sea level. There are many Yaku cedar trees and you can walk inside primeval forest. You have four different walking courses,30 min,50 min,80 min and 150min.

Kigen cedar

 

The altitude is 1,230m, the height is 19.5m, the height around the chest is 8.1m, and the estimated age is 3,000 years. It is the largest Yaku cedar that can be reached by car.

Jomon cedar

The altitude is 1,300m, the tree height is 25.3m, the height around the chest is 16.4m, and the estimated age is 2,170-7,200 years. The largest Yaku cedar that has been confirmed. There is a theory that the origin of the name is from the Jomon period and that the shape of the trunk is similar to Jomon pottery.

[Mountain Conservation Fundraising] You have to take the bus and ticket (one way 700 yens ,two ways 1400 yens) and give donation for mountain (1000 yens for one day and 2000 yens for 2 days and more)

[Access] 4-5 hours walk from Arakawa Trail head (one way)

Wilson stump

The altitude is 1,030m, the circumference of the chest is 13.8m, and the estimated age is 3,000 years. Yakushima's largest stump. It was allegedly harvested 400 years ago when it was presented to Hideyoshi Toyotomi (he was a Japanese daimyō and politician of the late Sengoku period ). Globally reported by the botanist Dr. A. H. Wilson in 1914.
