Welcome to Yakushima
December
Yakushima is a small island located in the south of Kyushu, about 60 km southwest of Kagoshima prefecture, with a population less than 13,000 people.
Yakushima was officially registered as Japan's first World Natural Heritage site, along with Shirakami mountain in Akita.
The uniqueness of Yakushima lies in the various ecosystems which exist at different altitudes. Each ecosystem has its own vegetation and unique landscape with gradual changes between them.
Yakushima is very proud of its status as a world natural heritage site - as botanists and zoologists have long said "It is a treasure for mankind”.
